    The effects of individual differences in native perception on discrimination of a novel non-native contrast

    Native (L1) phonetic categories can constrain the perception of non-native contrasts which deviate from the listener’s L1 (Best & Tyler, 2007; Flege, 1995). Yet, some individuals are remarkably successful at accurately perceiving non-native sounds (e.g., Bongaerts, van Summeren, Planken, & Schils, 1997). We hypothesize that compact L1 categories give an initial advantage in distinguishing non-native contrasts. Sixty-eight Spanish monolinguals were tested on the degree of compactness of their native category /i/, measured through a goodness-of-fit rating task. Participants listened to synthesized variants of the Spanish /i/ vowel (differing in F1, F2, or both) and rated them as either good or bad exemplars of their representation of this category. An individual /i/ compactness index was calculated for each participant and related to the individual perceived dissimilarity score for the novel Russian contrast /i – ɨ/. The Russian contrast /i – ɨ/ is a problematic contrast to perceive for Spanish speakers due to the absence of /ɨ/ in the Spanish vowel inventory, a sound acoustically very similar to /i/. In this study, the compactness of the L1 category /i/ weakly predicted perceptual sensitivity (dissimilarity scores) for the Russian contrast /i – ɨ/

    Speech Rhythm in Spontaneous and Controlled L2 Speaking Modes: Exploring Differences and Distance Measures

    Studies of speech rhythm have often used read speech rather than spontaneous speech in their comparisons. However, read speech has been shown to be perceptually different from spontaneous speech, which may be due to rhythmic differences between the two modes. To examine this, the effect of speaking mode (spontaneous or controlled) was assessed in a group of 82 Spanish-Catalan learners of English relative to a control group of 8 native English speakers. Results found strong rhythmic differences between the two modes, but minimal differences between the learners and native speakers. Additionally, Mahalanobis distance analyses revealed that non-native speakers differed significantly more from the native control group in the spontaneous condition than the controlled condition

    N-Palmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine stabilizes liposomes in the presence of human serum: effect of lipidic composition and system characterization

    AbstractLiposomes containing negatively-charged phospholipid, N-palmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (NPPE) were examined for stability in the presence of human serum, using the release of the entrapped 5,6-carboxyfluorescein as an aqueous marker. Either small unilamellar vesicles (SUV) or large unilamellar vesicles (LUV) were used. Incorporation of NPPE into PC SUV decreases leakage in the presence of serum or phosphate-buffered saline, no strictly related to size increase observed and to the surface negative charge present. The stabilizing effect of NPPE and Chol were synergistic. Inhibition of destabilization induced by serum of PC/Chol liposomes was observed when NPPE concentrations were above 12 mol%. Change in the membrane fluidity or incorporation of a monosialoganglioside into liposomes do not significantly change the half-life of liposomes in the presence of a high NPPE concentration. Incorporation of NPPE into PC/Chol liposomes increases membrane rigidity which does not change after serum incubation. The presence of NPPE in liposomes decreases lipid transfer/exchange between liposomes and lipoproteins although the same amount of serum proteins were incorporated as in PC/Chol liposomes. As expected, these proteins are accessible to trypsin digestion. In accordance with these results, the liposome agglutination assay shows no steric barrier activity. As a whole, the results obtained in this paper suggest a complex mechanism for stabilization of NPPE containing liposomes in human serum

    Determining the neutrino mass ordering and oscillation parameters with KM3NeT/ORCA

    [EN] The next generation of water Cherenkov neu-trino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea are under con- struction offshore France (KM3NeT/ORCA) and Sicily (KM3NeT/ARCA). The KM3NeT/ORCA detector features an energy detection threshold which allows to collect atmo- spheric neutrinos to study flavour oscillation. This paper reports the KM3NeT/ORCA sensitivity to this phenomenon. The event reconstruction, selection and classification are described. The sensitivity to determine the neutrino mass ordering was evaluated and found to be 4.4¿ if the true order- ing is normal and 2.3¿ if inverted, after 3 years of data taking. The precision to measure ¿m² and ¿¿¿ were also estimated and found to be 85.10¿¿ eV² and (¿¹.¿ -3.1)¿ for normal neu- trino mass ordering and, 75.10¿¿ eV² and (¿².¿ -7.0)¿ for inverted ordering. Finally, a unitarity test of the leptonic mixing matrix by measuring the rate of tau neutrinos is described.     Implementation and first results of the KM3NeT real-time core-collapse supernova neutrino search

    [EN] The KM3NeT research infrastructure is uncon- struction in the Mediterranean Sea. KM3NeT will study atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos with two multi- purpose neutrino detectors, ARCA and ORCA, primar-ily aimed at GeV¿PeV neutrinos. Thanks to the multi-photomultiplier tube design of the digital optical modules, KM3NeT is capable of detecting the neutrino burst from a Galactic or near-Galactic core-collapse supernova. This potential is already exploitable with the first detection units deployed in the sea. This paper describes the real-time imple- mentation of the supernova neutrino search, operating on the two KM3NeT detectors since the first months of 2019. A quasi-online astronomy analysis is introduced to study the time profile of the detected neutrinos for especially signifi- cant events. The mechanism of generation and distribution of alerts, as well as the integration into the SNEWS and SNEWS 2.0 global alert systems, are described. The approach for the follow-up of external alerts with a search for a neutrino excess in the archival data is defined.     Nanobeacon: A time calibration device for the KM3NeT neutrino telescope

    [EN] The KM3NeT Collaboration is currently constructing a multi-site high-energy neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea consisting of matrices of pressure-resistant glass spheres, each holding a set of 31 small-area photomultipliers. The main goals of the telescope are the observation of neutrino sources in the Universe and the measurement of the neutrino oscillation parameters with atmospheric neutrinos. A relative time synchronisation between photomultipliers of the nanosecond arder needed to guarantee the required angular resolution of the detector. Due to the large detector volumes to be instrumented by KM3NeT, a cost reduction of the different systems is a priority. To this end, the inexpensive Nanobeacon has been designed and developed by the KM3NeT Collaboration to be used for detector time-calibration studies. At present, more than 600 Nanobeacons have been already produced. The characterisation of the optical pulse and the wavelength emission profile of the devices is critica! for the time calibration. The optical pulse rise time has been quantified as less than 3 ns, while the Full Width Half Maximum is less than 6 ns. The wavelength drift, due to a variation of the supply voltage, has also been qualified as lower than 10 nm for the full range of the Nanobeacon.     Combined sensitivity of JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA to the neutrino mass ordering

    [EN] This article presents the potential of a combined analysis of the JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. This combination is particularly interesting as it significantly boosts the potential of either detector, beyond simply adding their neutrino mass ordering sensitivities, by removing a degeneracy in the determination of ¿m² between the two experiments when assuming the wrong ordering. The study is based on the latest projected performances for JUNO, and on simulation tools using a full Monte Carlo approach to the KM3NeT/ORCA response with a careful assessment of its energy systematics. From this analysis, a 5¿ determination of the neutrino mass ordering is expected after 6 years of joint data taking for any value of the oscillation parameters.     Chronicle of an early demise, surname extinction in the fifteenth and the seventeenth centuries

This article analyzes the evolution and consequences of surname extinction in a specific population: Catalonia in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In this article two aspects are examined. First, the observed disappearance of surnames is estimated through historical data collected in the Llibres d'Esposalles (Marriage Books) from 1481 to 1600 at Barcelona Cathedral.     Pan-cancer Alterations of the MYC Oncogene and Its Proximal Network across the Cancer Genome Atlas

    Although theMYConcogene has been implicated incancer, a systematic assessment of alterations ofMYC, related transcription factors, and co-regulatoryproteins, forming the proximal MYC network (PMN),across human cancers is lacking. Using computa-tional approaches, we define genomic and proteo-mic features associated with MYC and the PMNacross the 33 cancers of The Cancer Genome Atlas.Pan-cancer, 28% of all samples had at least one ofthe MYC paralogs amplified. In contrast, the MYCantagonists MGA and MNT were the most frequentlymutated or deleted members, proposing a roleas tumor suppressors.MYCalterations were mutu-ally exclusive withPIK3CA,PTEN,APC,orBRAFalterations, suggesting that MYC is a distinct onco-genic driver. Expression analysis revealed MYC-associated pathways in tumor subtypes, such asimmune response and growth factor signaling; chro-matin, translation, and DNA replication/repair wereconserved pan-cancer. This analysis reveals insightsinto MYC biology and is a reference for biomarkersand therapeutics for cancers with alterations ofMYC or the PMN
